The Truth about Toning

I overheard two girlfriends chatting about toning in the Starbucks line yesterday.

Here's how it went:

Girl 1: "I don't wanna get bulky, just wanna tone.

Girl 2: "ya, definitely don't lift weights, stick to cardio."

We've all either said or heard someone say " I just wanna be toned."

Crazy thing, toning is made up.

It was a way to get females into classes back in the day when they were male-dominated.

Toning is just losing fat and gaining muscle. Or losing fat and revealing the muscle underneath. And you def can't tone a certain part of your body. Spot-treating is not a thing, friends.

So how do we tone? Or should I say lose weight and gain muscle?

Simple. Focus on nutrition and a sustainable workout program. Your meals should have protein, fiber-rich carbs (think veggies), and fat.

Protein & fiber-rich carbs will keep you feeling full longer.

If your workouts are causing pain and wearing you down. - You might be doing too much. Getting close to failure on your reps is key for muscle growth.

Muscle growth doesn't mean being bulky.

Don't forget, if you're 30 or older, you're losing 3-8% of your muscle each decade so resistance training is a must.
